The Museum
of the Kings of Araucania is located in La Cheze, the family home of
Orelie-Antoine de Tounens, the first King of Araucania and Patagonia.
Orelie-Antoine was born in this house in 1825.
The museum, which is listed in the French Registry of Historical Places, is maintained by Prince Philippe of Araucania and contains artifacts and documents pertaining to the Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia and to the Mapuche people. It also contains an art gallery in which exhibitions of local artists are mounted regularly. The museum is about 5 kilometers from Tourtoirac, where Orelie-Antoine died in 1878. A plaque on the side of a house in Tourtoirac's main street marks where Orelie-Antoine died. The Tourtoirac cemetery contains the remains of both King Orelie-Antoine and King Achille. The museum is open from 10:30 am to 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is 10 FF for adults, 5 FF for children under 7 years. |
